JVC Everio GZ-M505 Camcorder

jvc_505.jpgJVC continues its run away from video tape and onto hard drives with its Everio GZ-M505 camcorder, a higher-end consumer model with three CCDs and 30GB hard disk. That amount of space will give you 7 hours of its highest quality video, or 10 hours of what the company calls “DVD camcorder quality.”

JVC touts higher image quality with this model, where it can shoot in a native 16×9 resolution of 1173 x 660. That’s a cut above standard definition, but not quite HD. There’s a 10x optical zoom, and you get 5-megapixel still shooting, and oh yeah, you can store 10,000 stills on that on that 60-gig disk. Only thing we don’t much like about this camera is its price, $1300. For that much money, you can get a high-definition camcorder from Sony. The GZ-M505 will be available this July.

Canon PowerShot S3 IS

Digital Camera Resource got their mits on the Canon PowerShot S3 IS recently and were kind enough to post a detailed review for our perusal. While the S3 isn’t exactly “an exciting upgrade” over its S2 IS predecessor, the reviewer still found it to be an “excellent” ultra zoom camera. Besides the bump from 5 to 6 mexapixels, the camera’s two most touted new features are ISO 800 sensitivity and 60fps QVGA / 30fps VGA recording. Well, the ISO 800 snaps shot under low light were found to be, er, “not usable” while those taken under normal light should be limited to 4×6 prints with the aid of some noise reduction software. However, the overall noise level was still considered “low for a 6 megapixel camera.” Meanwhile, the video capabilities were found to be excellent due to stereo sound recording and the ability to zoom silently while filming. However, lacking an MPEG-4 codec means your flicks will hit the 1GB per recording wall in only 9-minutes under the highest quality settings. Overall, the camera earns the reviewer’s “enthusiastic recommendation” due to its “very good photo quality” and “snappy performance” in a “solid and capable” ultra zoom

Microsoft Fingerprint Reader Firefox Extension

Microsoft Fingerprint Reader may look cool and be very useful in storing your passwords, but it’s lousy when it comes to working with Firefox. We found this out the hard way last year when we purchased a reader and it didn’t work a lick with Firefox.

Now there’s a Firefox extension that allows a workaround for the reader software to recognize Firefox as a valid fingerprint capable app. Wee! Yet another way for us to pretend we’re Tom Cruise.

USB MyPet Puppy and Monkey Webcam

Lovers of cute things (and the Japanese) will snatch up this USB MyPet Webcam that comes in both monkey and puppy models. Supporting up to 640×480 at 15 frames per second, this webcam is perfect for the girlfriend that hates tech.

Readers could also use it to spy on a victim who doesn’t know this is a webcam. A very dumb victim.
