Wii Classic Controller

photo_classic.jpgThis isn't on the English Nintendo site yet, but the Japanese site has information about the Wii Classic Controller. For games that don't use the new Wiimote with its motion sensing capabilities, or for people who aren't keen on going Nunchaku with the two handed version, we have the SNES-like classic.

Featuring four face buttons (y, x, b, a), select and start, two analog sticks, a d-pad and four shoulder buttons, this Wii controller should feel right at home to anyone who's played a game in the last two decades.

E3 2006: The Grey Lady Drinks the Wii

 - GizmodoThe NY Times has a dedicated gaming ninja, Seth Schiesel, on the floor at E3 and he has some hands-on time with the Wii. The verdict? Gyroscopic controllers are cool and that this thing might actually be worth buying.

First up was a tennis game. This was certainly the simplest game because I didn’t have to press any of the controller’s buttons at all. It was set up as a doubles match with a split screen, and simply swinging the controller in a tennis-like motion caused both of my players (the one at the net and the one back on the baseline) to swing simultaneously, sort of like a pinball machine where one button causes two flippers to flip, one at the bottom and one at the top.

The Race is On: 360 vs. PS3

 - GizmodoThe Wall Street Journal, that bastion of strong gaming journalism, has a detailed look at the business behind the 360 and the PS3. Essentially, they’re saying that Sony is gambling that Blu-Ray and its attendant coolness will propel the console and the media into the stratosphere. The make or break point, however, is E3.

“Clearly, Sony is playing catch-up at this point,” says P.J. McNealy, an analyst at American Technology Research. But he says that Sony could bridge that gap, and this week is “a significant waypoint to see if Sony has its act together on the PlayStation 3.”

Microsoft has shipped 3.3 million consoles—all of them to a Best Buy in Juneau, Alaska, apparently—and is banking on this hearty lead to knock PS3 down a peg or two. Will it happen? Probably not, but the HD DVD adapter will definitely have some effect on that media’s penetration into the home. We shall see, friends.

JBL Radial iPod Speaker System

jbl_radial.jpgIf this JBL Radial speaker system sounds as good as it looks, we’re in for a treat. It has a quartet of aluminum-domed drivers with some serious magnets inside, all pumped up with 60 watts of musical goodness. Dock the iPod in the middle, and the whole thing looks like a piece of avant-garde architecture. Includes a smart RF remote and ships next month for $300.

Apple Announces Deals With Fox, NBA

itms.jpgLooks like the suits at Apple have been hard at work getting more and more content providers (what a terrible, Newspeak-sounding phrase that is) to embrace the iTunes Music Store. Deals were just announced with Fox and the NBA to bring their high quality programming to a computer near you. Fox will make available for $1.99 its big hit 24 along with Prison Break, The Shield and Firefly, among others from its numerous cable networks. The NBA will be making available full games and its post game analysis shows, such as Inside the NBA on TNT for this year’s playoffs within 24 hours of the games’ conclusions for $1.99 each. There’s also a $9 team replay package that contains highlights of your favorite team’s performance throughout the year. The NBA had made its content available on Google Video, but was only compatible with Windows. Now Mac users can join in on the fun of watching sports long after the game’s completion. How exciting!

Warner Bros. to Use BitTorrent to Distribute Movies

warnerbros.jpgThe BitTorrent peer-to-peer system as for warez, right? Not according to Warner Bros. Entertainment Group, which signed a deal to start using BitTorrent this summer to distribute movies and television shows. According to BitTorrent officials, the Warner moviemakers are fascinated with the filesharing technology. The company plans to release movies on BitTorrent the same day those titles are shipped on DVD. Says Kevin Tsujihara, president of the Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group:

“If we can convert 5, 10, 15 percent of the peer-to-peer users that have been obtaining our product from illegitimate sources to becoming legitimate buyers of our product, that has the potential of a huge impact on our industry and our economics.”

But we’re thinking these movies and TV shows will be so completely wrapped up in DRM it might be a problem unraveling it all once you get them onto your hard drive. The movies and shows will reportedly be available for as little as one dollar, but even at that low cost, it’s still going to be hard to compete with free.
